Animals (including domesticated pets) can harbor infections, known as zoonotic diseases or zoonoses, which can be transmitted to humans. It has been estimated that over 30 zoonotic diseases (bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal) can be transmitted to man by direct or indirect contact with the animal. For example, domestic dogs or cats can harbor many pathogens that may be transmitted to humans, such as Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus. to name just some common ones.
It's estimated that in Western Europe and the USA, more than 30% of households own either a dog or a cat, and that between 20% and 60% of these carry communicable pathogens.
