| When Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council was looking for 1000 compost bins for around 50 allotments, the timber bin solution from Herriard Sawmills proved to be a winner. The Council was looking for both a practical and environmentally friendly solution, whilst in keeping with the allotment environment into which they would be placed. “We were delighted to win this order, especially as it highlights the green credentials of pressure treated timber. |
The wood, supplied by BSW Timber, was made into three plain panels and one panel with a door for removal of the finished compost. We then pressure treated the timber that will contain the rotting compost material with Tanalith E preservative, in order to maintain its integrity for many years to come.” explained Michael Self, owner of Herriard Sawmills.
The panels are delivered to each allotment and then assembled where they are needed. The contract to manufacture started in May and is now being completed by Herriard Sawmills.
“The environmental considerations were paramount – the timber used is FSC Certified, and the preservative treatment itself is the latest generation product, designed to provide a safe, high performance protection to the timber. And, the icing on the cake is that our timber solution was also the most cost effective as compared with other, less renewable or recyclable materials such as plastic.” concluded Self.
