Arch Protects The 'Greenest' Motorway Services

 Wetherby

Moto’s new Wetherby service station at Junction 46 of the A1(M) has had the timber of its service centre ceiling and the filling station ceiling fire protected with Arch's Non-Com Exterior fire retardant. The services are being hailed as Britain’s ‘greenest’, with features such as water boreholes, natural ventilation and over 2000 trees planted on the site.

With the environmental impact being of utmost importance, all of the timber for the project has been supplied from sustainable accredited sources – FSC, CSA, PEFC or similar.

The Western Red Cedar timbers that create the interior and exterior ceiling of the service area and the Douglas Fir timbers used for the underside of the filling station canopy have been fire treated to achieve the required fire performance. Non-Com   Exterior was applied at Arch’s fire treatment centre at its Castleford headquarters in West Yorkshire.

The treatment process involves pressure impregnation of the fire retardant chemicals into the timber followed by careful kiln drying and heat curing. The Western Red Cedar slatted ceiling panels were also prefabricated with concealed fixings and acoustic insulation pads were bonded to the timber panels to achieve the required acoustic rating.
