NON-COM Exterior protects tenants in new Dutch housing association development
Apeldoorn apartments

A dramatic new building development is relying on Arch Timber Protection’s fire retardant NON-COM Exterior for the protection of its extensive Western Red Cedar cladding. Arch’s NON-COM Exterior has been used for Foreco Dalfsen BV’s SafeWood Select brand timber, which was chosen for the housing association development project, based in Apeldoorn, Holland. The timber cladding, which has used over 100 m3 of treated wood, will need no further fire retardant treatment over the life of the building, and conforms to the required European fire protection standards.

The building development belongs to the housing association Woningstichting de Goede Woning te Apeldoorn, which owns houses people can rent. The four attractive, wood-clad multi-storey blocks, in Laan Van Orden, a street in Apeldoorn, are nearing completion.

The development is designed to include 12 houses and 72 apartments. The architects, Netherlands-based Tangram Architecten, have previously worked with timber protected with NON-COM Exterior, as well as other Arch products, including Tanalith and Dricon.

“This is an amazing-looking building, and we are proud that our fire-retardant products can protect the building’s cladding, and therefore its tenants, whilst maintaining the natural appearance of the Western Red Cedar,” says Arno van Oosten, General Manager, Arch Timber Protection, Holland.

NON-COM Exterior pre-treated timber and sheet materials are supplied vacuum-pressure impregnated with a water-based polymer fire retardant, and are kiln-dried and heat cured ready for use. The protection makes little change to the surface appearance of the wood, does not affect its strength, and allows it to weather as normal. The protection is leach-resistant and the wood can be used internally or externally without any further coating.

“We use Arch Timber Protection’s NON-COM Exterior for SafeWood Select, because it guarantees fire protection for the life of the building" said Peter Swager, Managing Director of Foreco Dalfsen BV.

In November 2008, cladding treated with Arch’s timber preservative Tanalith E, and fire retardant Dricon, received DUBO-keur accreditation, issued by NIBE, the Dutch Institute for Building Biology and Ecology. This validates Arch’s place in sustainable building.
